The Parker’s Residence

Statement of the Design Problem

The Parker family, prominent members of society, has obtained your services to design their summer residence, a luxury apartment located in Richmond, Virginia.  The apartment is approximately a three-hour drive from the Parker’s year-round home.  The summer residence is located on the penthouse story of a 10-store building and is approximately 2400 square feet (2394 sq. ft.).   The Parker’s have a daughter entering Emory University soon and have also requested that selections be made for furnishing and accessories for her studio apartment in Atlanta, Georgia.   The Parker family plans to spend virtually every weekend at this residence, as well as longer vacation periods.  Mrs. Parker’s mother, who has asthma, plans to spend many vacation weekends with the couple.  The family plans to entertain frequently.  Mr. Parker is an astronomy enthusiast who encourages his guests to use his telescope to view the stars.  Mrs. Parker also enjoys collecting oil paintings and loves to display her growing collection. The couple would like to incorporate their favorite color, navy blue, in the color scheme.  The residence is to include an entry/foyer area, a living area, a dining area, a kitchen, a master bedroom/bathroom, and a guest bedroom and bathroom.   A budget of $50,000 has been set by the client’s to meet the programming requirements.

Concept Statement

A space will be created that is relaxing and inviting to the Parker’s and their family to spend their vacation time during the summer.  An open floor plan will be used that will make it easy for the Parker’s to entertain.  A place will be provided where Mr. Parker can use his telescope and share it with guests.   Lots of open wall space and special lighting will be incorporated in the social areas of the house to allow Mrs. Parker to display her collection of oil paintings.  The Parker’s favorite color navy blue will be worked into the color schemes throughout the home.   Special accommodations will be made for Mrs. Parker’s mother to assure her comfort and safety. The overall atmosphere of the penthouse will be simple, yet elegant.
